Unlikely Choice for Civic Center Art Exhibition

Oil painter Alicia DeBrincat’s life-sized female nudes have been described as “titillating” and “unnerving,” not words one would expect in conjunction with art hanging proudly in a Berkeley city government building.  Despite the racy content of most of her work, the City of Berkeley recently awarded DeBrincat an Honorarium and selected her work for inclusion in their Civic Center Art Exhibition 2007 - 2008 show.  DeBrincat’s work joins that of 29 other Berkeley artists chosen from over 500 applicants to adorn the Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center Building through September 2008.  The exhibit is presented by the City of Berkeley Public Art Program and the Civic Arts Commission and is funded by the 1.5% for public art program.  Which of DeBrincat’s paintings is on display?  A tame and understated still life. 

“I’m honored that my painting was selected for this exhibition,” states Alicia DeBrincat.  “I’m not sure if the panel of curators knew that most of my portfolio consists of graphic nudes.   If they did know, I’m glad it didn’t affect their decision to include me in this show.” 

Civic Center Art Exhibition 2007 – 2008 is on display at The Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center Building at 2180 Milvia Street.
